To prevent bacterial growth under your fingernails, keep them dry and clean. Wear rubber gloves lined with cotton while dishwashing as your fingernails can split from prolonged contact with water.  
Trim your nails using sharp manicure scissors or clippers. Trim straight across and finish with a gentle curve around the tips. While using hand lotion, apply it on your fingernails as well. You can also apply a nail hardener to make your fingernails strong.
